25 years. f****** hell. 25 years. Coming in as a greenhorn, desperately pedalling to try and keep up, find out what I'm meant to do, and leaving it much the same way, except with maybe a wee bit more knowledge.
Favourite moments? So many. Desmond Dekker, Ray Davies, Billy Bragg, Lisa Hannigan, Tommy Tiernan, Bill Bailey, Dylan Moran, The Perm State Ballet, The Beauty Queen of Lenanne, Mikel Murfi, Pat Kinevane, Little John Nee. That Christmas Party Karaoke in the theatre bar. The list goes on.
And what have I learnt? That people deserve to be paid for their work, no matter how early in their career, not matter how small the gig, you pay people.
I've learned you can't talk people into going to a show they're not interested in, not in big numbers anyway, and the simplest message is the best. I've learnt that men are happy to go to shows on their own, and women like to go along with other people. So shows for women are easier to sell, yet most shows are by and about men, go figure.
I've learnt that a 'dark comedy' is not going to have any laughs, that a comedy play isn't going to sell anywhere near as well as stand-up comedy. People will always worry about audiences 'ageing out' without realising that audiences are also 'ageing in'. That the joy of live performance will always be with us, and always be important,
That change is possible but you have to put the work and time into bringing people with you. I learnt that one the hard way.
It's all about the people, the people you work with are the main resource, they're the ones who are going to pull you out of that hole, and make you look so much better at your job.
Take a little time and enjoy the wins, not too much time. Similarly don't dwell on things that go wrong. Learn from them and move on.
